Why this book exists

Her story starts
on our shore.

When the towels are packed and the sun goes down, a different beach day begins. A mother turtle comes ashore. A nest stirs beneath the sand. Hatchlings begin their first journey.

What we leave behind matters. A hole, a chair, or a light can make that journey harder. Find the Ocean helps kids understand the difference they can make.

They are not going to the water.
They are going to the light.

On a natural beach, hatchlings head for the brightest thing they can see: the open sky over the water. A porch light, a phone, a hotel window — any of those can turn them the wrong way. This book teaches kids, and their grown-ups, how to keep the beach dark.

The story

Six chapters. One long walk to the water.

Before a single puzzle, the book tells the true story of a Florida sea turtle's life — the parts that are hard, and the part that's finally going right.

Chapter one illustration — a sea turtle swimming over a coral reef
Chapter one
Meet Florida's sea turtles
Five species share one coastline. Learn who's who — and why every one of them is protected by law.
Chapter two illustration — hatchlings fanning out from the nest toward the surf
Chapter two
She comes ashore
A mother weighing close to three hundred pounds hauls herself up a beach near the one where she hatched, to dig a nest in the dark.
Chapter three illustration — a hatchling climbing up through the sand
Chapter three
Hatching night
Around sixty days later, approximately a hundred hatchlings boil up out of the sand — and run toward the brightest light they can see.
Chapter four illustration — a young turtle drifting in seaweed
Chapter four
The lost years
Where do they go? For a decade, almost nobody knew. The answer floats in the Atlantic.
Chapters five and six tell the truth about what’s killing the turtles — and the good news nobody expects: conservation is working. Then the reader takes the Ocean Guardian Pledge.
For the kids reading over a shoulder

Which light should they follow?

It’s hatching night. A hundred hatchlings are heading for the water — and they find it by running toward the brightest, most open part of the sky. Tap the light they’re supposed to follow.

Hatching night — dozens of hatchlings crawl from the nest toward the surf under a full moon
That’s the one — the sky over the water. Lights out on everything else.
Then the fun part

So much more than coloring.

Six chapters to spark curiosity. Activities to keep it going.
